New to the U.S.? How to Get a Tesla With No Credit History
No U.S. credit history? You can still drive a Tesla. Rent-to-Own runs no credit check and no income verification β here's exactly what you need to start.

To get a car in the U.S. with no credit history, you need a program that doesn't check credit at all β loans and leases both price you off a score you haven't built yet. TeslaRented's Rent-to-Own is one of those programs: no credit check, no income verification and no application scoring, so any licensed driver in the U.S. who can insure the car qualifies. You make a first payment upfront, then biweekly payments for 48 months, and the title transfers into your name at the end.
That removes the single biggest obstacle newcomers hit at a dealership: a credit score that doesn't exist yet. There's no co-signer requirement, no two years of tax returns, and the agreement isn't reported to credit bureaus as debt.
Why is it so hard to get a car with no U.S. credit history?
A credit score is built from years of U.S. accounts. If you arrived six weeks ago, lenders see a blank file β which they treat as risk, not as a clean slate. Credit history from your home country almost never transfers.
In practice that means:
- Loan applications get declined or repriced. With no file, approvals often come back with a much higher rate, a large down payment, or both.
- Leases are usually off the table. Captive lease programs are built around strong, established credit, and a Tesla lease is no exception.
- A co-signer gets asked for. Someone with established U.S. credit has to put their name on your debt, which most people new to the country simply don't have access to.
- Income verification adds friction. New job, probation period, contract work or self-employment all complicate the paperwork even when the money is there.
None of that says anything about whether you can actually afford and take care of a car. It only says the system has no data on you yet.
Can you get a Tesla with no credit history at all?
Yes, through Rent-to-Own. The qualification standard is short:
- You hold a valid driver's license in the U.S.
- You can insure a Tesla with full coverage, listing EK Rentals, Inc. as interested party / additional insured.
That's it. There is no credit pull, no score threshold, no income verification and no application scoring. Payments aren't reported to credit bureaus as debt, so the agreement won't show up on your credit report; how any individual lender treats it is their call, so ask them directly.
You can read the full qualification details on the no-credit-check Tesla page, and the mechanics of the agreement on the Rent-to-Own page.
What Rent-to-Own actually is
For 48 months you pay biweekly, and the title transfers into your name once the term is complete. Scheduled maintenance, brakes and tires are included, and you get a backup car while yours is being serviced. After the 48 months are complete and the final payment clears, the title is transferred to you within 14 business days.
If your plans change, you return the car. There are no termination fees. Payments already made don't carry over, but you aren't locked into a term the way you are with a lease or a loan.
Rent-to-Own or month-to-month: which fits a newcomer?
It depends on how long you expect to be here and whether you want to end up owning the car.
| Rent-to-Own | Month-to-month rental | |
| Credit check | None | None |
| Term | Biweekly payments for 48 months | One flat monthly rate, no term |
| Ownership | Title in your name after 48 months | None |
| Upfront | First payment instead of a deposit | Refundable deposit, returned after the return inspection |
| Maintenance, brakes, tires | Included | Included |
| Backup car during service | Yes | Yes |
| Mileage | Plans start at 1,000 miles a month | Plans start at 1,000 miles a month |
| Delivery | Free to any address in the continental U.S. | Anywhere in the continental U.S., quoted per address |
| Exit | Return the car, no termination fees | Return it when plans change |
A one-year assignment, a graduate program or an uncertain visa timeline usually points to month-to-month. If you're planting roots and want the car to be yours at the end, Rent-to-Own is the one that builds toward a title.
What do you need to get started?
A valid driver's license
You need to be a licensed driver in the U.S. License rules differ by state, and whether an out-of-country or international permit works for your situation is something to confirm before you pay anything β call or text (818) 458-8729 and ask directly rather than assuming.
Full-coverage insurance
This is the step most newcomers underestimate, so plan for it early. You carry your own full-coverage policy with EK Rentals, Inc. listed as interested party / additional insured. If you can't add the car to a policy of your own, we help with coverage options.
Two practical notes:
- Insurers price heavily on driving history, and a short U.S. history can mean a higher premium at first. Shop more than one carrier.
- Anyone else who will drive the car β a spouse, a roommate, a colleague β must be on the policy and approved by us in writing before they get behind the wheel.
An address in the continental U.S.
Rent-to-Own delivery is free to any address in the continental U.S., so you don't need to be near Los Angeles, and you don't need to fly anywhere to collect the car. Month-to-month rentals deliver throughout the continental U.S. as well, quoted per address.
A card on file
Supercharging is charged automatically to a card you keep on file. Tickets and tolls are yours too.
How does the money upfront work?
This is the part that makes Rent-to-Own workable when you've just moved and your savings are spread thin.
- A small refundable reservation deposit gets you started. It's credited toward your first payment.
- The rest of the first payment can be paid in portions. You pay whenever you can, in pieces, instead of producing one lump sum on day one.
- The car ships once the first payment is complete. The agreement is signed at that point and you're matched with an available car of the model you chose.
- Your biweekly schedule is identical either way. The biweekly payment schedule is the same whether you complete the first payment all at once or in portions.
One thing to know: while you're paying in portions, no specific car is held for you. You're matched with an available car of your chosen model when the first payment is complete.
Amounts move with the live fleet, so check the Rent-to-Own calculator for the current first payment and biweekly figure on each model and mileage plan.
Is Rent-to-Own better than financing with no credit?
It isn't a question of price. The difference is what each one asks of you and what it includes: Rent-to-Own skips the credit check entirely, covers the wear items, and ends with the title in your name.
| Rent-to-Own | Dealer financing with thin credit | |
| Credit check | None | Yes, and a thin file usually means a worse rate |
| Income verification | None | Typically required |
| Co-signer | Not required | Often requested |
| Maintenance, brakes, tires | Included | Your cost |
| Backup car during service | Included | No |
| Changing your mind | Return the car, no termination fees | Sell or refinance, you may owe the gap |
| Reported as debt | No | Yes |
| Own it at the end | Yes, title after 48 months | Yes, after the term |
The honest pitch: you skip the approval process entirely, the wear items are covered, and the car becomes yours at the end of the term.
How to start, step by step
- Choose your model and mileage plan. Model 3, Model Y, Model S and Model X are all available; mileage plans start at 1,000 miles a month and step up from there.
- Place the refundable reservation deposit. It goes toward your first payment.
- Line up insurance. Full coverage with EK Rentals, Inc. as interested party / additional insured. Start quotes now, not later.
- Complete the first payment. All at once or in portions, on your timeline.
- Take delivery. Free to any address in the continental U.S. on Rent-to-Own.
- Pay biweekly for 48 months. There's a 5-day grace period on payments, and the title transfers within 14 business days after the final payment clears.
