Monthly Tesla Rental vs Rent-to-Own: Which One Should You Pick?

Month-to-month Tesla rental or Rent-to-Own? Compare terms, upfront costs, mileage, delivery and exit rules so you pick the right program the first time.

TeslaRented runs two programs, and the right one comes down to one question: do you want to end up owning the car? Pick Rent-to-Own if you plan to keep a Tesla for years and want the title in your name after 48 months of biweekly payments. Pick a month-to-month rental if your timeline is uncertain β€” a contract job, a few months between cars, a trial run at rideshare β€” and you want one flat monthly rate you can walk away from.

Neither program runs a credit check, verifies income, or scores an application. Any licensed driver in the U.S. who can insure a Tesla qualifies for both. Below is everything that's actually different.

What's identical in both programs

Before the differences, here's what you get either way:

  • No credit check, no income verification, no application scoring. Payments aren't reported to credit bureaus as debt.
  • Maintenance, brakes and tires are included, and you get a backup car while yours is being serviced.
  • A mileage plan starting at 1,000 miles per month, with higher steps available.
  • Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X and Cybertruck β€” see what's on the lot at available Teslas.
  • You carry your own full-coverage insurance with EK Rentals, Inc. listed as interested party / additional insured.
  • No termination fees. Return the car any time.
  • Delivery anywhere in the continental U.S.

So the choice isn't about car quality or service. It's about time, money rhythm and whether you want a title at the end.

When Rent-to-Own is the better pick

You want the car to be yours

This is the big one. After 48 months of on-time biweekly payments, the title is transferred into your name within 14 business days of the final payment clearing. Nothing about that depends on your credit score, your income documentation, or a bank's underwriting desk. If you've been turned down for financing or you have no U.S. credit history yet, this is the path that still ends with a car you own.

You already know you'll be driving for years

If you commute daily, drive rideshare full-time, or simply want to stop renewing something every month, a 48-month path gives you a fixed schedule and an end date. You're not re-deciding every 30 days.

You want delivery included

Rent-to-Own includes free delivery to any address in the continental U.S. You don't have to live near Glendale, California, or fly anywhere to pick up a car.

You can spread the first payment out

Rent-to-Own starts with a small refundable reservation deposit that's credited toward your first payment. The rest of the first payment can be paid all at once or in portions, whenever you can manage it. The car ships and the agreement is signed once the first payment is complete, and the biweekly schedule is the same either way. One caveat: no specific car is held while you're paying in portions β€” you're matched with an available car of your chosen model at the point the first payment is done.

When a month-to-month rental is the better pick

Your timeline is short or unknown

A six-month assignment, a relocation, a car in the shop for a long repair, a visa or job situation that could change β€” these are all reasons not to sign up for four years. A long-term Tesla rental renews monthly and ends when you say it ends.

You want to try a Tesla before committing

Plenty of drivers have never lived with an EV. Charging habits, range in cold weather, how a Model Y fits your family β€” a couple of months on a monthly rental answers all of that with no four-year commitment attached. If you love it, you know exactly which model to go Rent-to-Own on.

You don't want ownership at all

Some people genuinely don't want a title, a resale decision, or a car sitting in a driveway after they move. A flat monthly rate with maintenance, brakes and tires included is a cleaner arrangement for them.

You want a refundable deposit instead of a first payment

Month-to-month takes a refundable security deposit, returned after the return inspection. A refundable deposit starts the reservation and is credited to the first payment; the car is held for your start date once the full payment β€” first month plus the security deposit β€” is paid, and that payment stays fully refundable until 10 days before your pickup or delivery date.

Which one is better for Uber and Lyft drivers?

It depends on how long you plan to drive. If rideshare is your job and you intend to keep at it, Rent-to-Own means the miles you're putting on the car are going toward something you'll own. If you're testing whether the economics work for you in your city, start month-to-month.

Either way, pay attention to the mileage plan. Plans run from 1,000 to 6,000 miles a month in 1,000-mile steps, and full-time drivers usually need a high step. There's also an optional Driver Plan aimed at rideshare drivers that lowers the cost of each mileage step above the base β€” call or text (818) 458-8729 to see how it would work for your driving. Full details are on the rideshare page.

Every rental has a mileage plan, so estimate honestly: a full-time rideshare week can put on far more miles than a month of commuting.

What about leasing or financing instead?

A lease or a loan is a different animal. Both involve a credit application, and both can come with a term you can't exit without penalty. What's different about Rent-to-Own is the structure, not the price: there's no credit check, the title is yours after 48 months, maintenance, brakes and tires are included, you get a backup car during service, and you can hand the keys back with no termination fee if your situation changes.

How to start, either way

  1. Pick your model. Browse available Teslas and check current pricing for Model 3, Model Y, Model S, Model X and Cybertruck.
  2. Pick your mileage plan. Start from your real weekly driving, not your best guess. Steps go from 1,000 to 6,000 miles a month.
  3. Choose the program. Rent-to-Own for the title in 48 months; month-to-month for flexibility. Run the numbers on the Rent-to-Own calculator.
  4. Line up insurance. You'll carry a full-coverage policy with EK Rentals, Inc. listed as interested party / additional insured. If you can't add the car to your own policy, we help with coverage options.
  5. Place the reservation deposit. It's refundable and credited toward your first payment on either program.
  6. Complete the payment and take delivery. Rent-to-Own delivery is free anywhere in the continental U.S.; monthly delivery is quoted per address.

If you're unsure which program fits β€” or you want to know how something specific would work in your situation β€” call or text (818) 458-8729 and ask before you put money down.

What to do next

Decide on the end state first: title in your name, or keys you can hand back. Then pick the model and mileage plan that match how you actually drive, and start at get started β€” the reservation deposit is refundable on both programs.

Questions from this article

Payments already made on one agreement don't carry over to another, so don't assume a monthly rental builds equity toward a title. If you want to move from one program to the other, call or text (818) 458-8729 and ask how it would work for your specific situation before you commit.
