Can You Get a Tesla With No Money Down? What You Actually Pay Upfront

There's no true zero-down Tesla, but you can start with a small refundable reservation deposit and pay the first payment in portions. Here's how upfront costs work.

There is no true zero-down way to get a Tesla, and anyone promising one is hiding the money somewhere else. What exists at TeslaRented is a first payment you can break into pieces: a small refundable reservation deposit gets you started, and the rest of the first payment can be paid in portions, whenever you can, before the car ships. There's no credit check and no income verification, so the first payment is doing the work a credit score would normally do.

Below is exactly what you pay before a Tesla shows up at your address, what you don't, and how to keep the upfront number as low as possible.

Is there a zero-down Tesla anywhere?

Short answer: not in a way that helps the reader this article is for.

Zero-down offers at dealerships and banks exist, but they're underwritten. The lender takes the risk off a credit report instead of off cash, which means a hard pull, income documents, and an approval you may not get if your file is thin, damaged, or brand new to the U.S. If you're approved, the down payment just moves into the monthly payment and the interest.

A leasing "nothing due at signing" ad usually still requires first month, registration and fees at delivery, and always requires credit approval.

So the real question isn't can I pay nothing. It's what's the smallest amount I can start with, and can I pay the rest at my own pace?

What do you actually pay upfront at TeslaRented?

There are two programs, and the upfront structure is different for each.

Rent-to-Own

Rent-to-Own uses a first payment instead of a security deposit. You pay it once, then make the same biweekly payment for 48 months, and the title transfers into your name after the term is complete and the final payment clears.

Getting started works like this:

  1. A small refundable reservation deposit starts your reservation and is credited toward your first payment.
  2. The rest of the first payment can be paid all at once, or in portions, whenever you can.
  3. Once the first payment is complete, the agreement is signed and the car ships β€” delivery is free to any address in the continental U.S.

Two things worth knowing before you choose the portions route. No specific car is held while you're paying in portions; when the first payment is complete, you're matched with an available car of the model you chose. And portion payments are credit toward a TeslaRented rental, not cash refunds.

The biweekly payment schedule is identical whether you pay the first payment in one go or over several weeks. The biweekly payment schedule is identical either way β€” paying in portions simply moves your delivery date to whenever you finish the first payment.

Month-to-month rental

A month-to-month rental is the no-commitment option: one flat monthly rate, return the car when your plans change, no ownership at the end.

Upfront, it works differently. A small refundable deposit starts the reservation and is credited to your first payment. The car is held for your start date once the full payment β€” first month plus a refundable security deposit β€” is paid. That payment is fully refundable until 10 days before your pickup or delivery date. The security deposit comes back after the return inspection.

Month-to-month delivery is available anywhere in the continental U.S., but it's quoted per address rather than included.

We're not going to tell you Rent-to-Own totals less than a loan or a lease. If you can qualify for financing at a rate you like, price that out first. What Rent-to-Own gives you is a different set of trade-offs: no credit check, no income verification, maintenance included, the title at the end, and the ability to hand the car back with no termination fee if life changes. More on the approval side is on no credit check Tesla.

Why is there a first payment at all if there's no credit check?

Because something has to stand in for underwriting. A bank decides whether to hand over a car by scoring your credit file and your income. We don't do either β€” any licensed U.S. driver who can insure a Tesla qualifies. The first payment is what makes that possible, and it's the only thing standing between a thin credit file and a Tesla in your driveway.

That trade matters most for three groups:

  • Drivers rebuilding credit who'd be quoted a punishing rate, if they're approved at all.
  • People new to the U.S. with no domestic credit history, which no score can fix quickly.
  • Self-employed and gig workers whose income is real but doesn't document the way a lender wants.

How do you keep the upfront amount as low as possible?

Four levers, in the order that moves the number most:

  1. Choose the model carefully. The first payment scales with the car. The Model 3 carries the lowest first payment of the four models; Model S and Model X carry the highest. If the goal is to get into a Tesla with the least cash upfront, the Model 3 is the starting point.
  2. Start at the 1,000-mile plan. Mileage plans run from 1,000 to 6,000 miles a month in 1,000-mile steps, and each step adds to the biweekly payment. Pick the plan that matches the miles you actually drive, not the miles you might drive.
  3. Use the reservation deposit and pay the rest in portions. This is the whole point of the structure. You can start the clock now and finish the first payment over several paychecks instead of waiting until you've saved the full amount.
  4. Check the live fleet before you decide. Pricing moves with what's actually available. The current cars and numbers are on the available Teslas page, and you can model a biweekly payment against a mileage plan with the Rent-to-Own calculator.

What upfront costs do people forget?

The first payment isn't the only money that leaves your account in week one. Budget for these too:

  • Insurance. You carry your own full-coverage policy with EK Rentals, Inc. listed as interested party / additional insured, so you'll pay a first premium or a policy change before delivery. If you can't add the car to your existing policy, we'll help you look at coverage options.
  • Charging. Supercharging is the renter's cost and a card on file is charged for it automatically. Home or public Level 2 charging is usually cheaper per mile if you have access to it.
  • Tolls and tickets. Yours, same as any car you drive.
  • Month-to-month delivery, if that's the program you choose β€” it's quoted per address.

What you don't budget for: routine maintenance, brakes and tires, and a backup car while yours is being serviced. Those are included on both programs. And if the car isn't in working order, it's repaired or replaced within two business days with no charge for the downtime.

What to do next

If the upfront number is what's been stopping you, the move is to start the reservation with the refundable deposit and pay the rest of the first payment at the pace you can manage. Look at the current fleet, run your mileage plan through the calculator, then begin at get started.
