Rent-to-Own
Tesla Rent-to-Own Requirements: What Do You Actually Need?
What you need to Rent-to-Own a Tesla: a U.S. driver's license, full-coverage insurance and a first payment. No credit check, no income verification, no cosigner.

The Tesla Rent-to-Own requirements at TeslaRented are short: a valid U.S. driver's license, a full-coverage insurance policy that will cover the car with EK Rentals, Inc. listed as interested party / additional insured, and the first payment. That's the whole list. There is no credit check, no income verification, no application scoring and no cosigner, and the payments are not reported to credit bureaus as debt.
If you can legally drive in the U.S. and you can insure a Tesla, you qualify. Below is exactly what each requirement means, what it costs you in time, and what is not required β because most of the paperwork people expect from a dealership or a lender simply doesn't exist here.

1. A valid U.S. driver's license
Any licensed driver in the U.S. can qualify. You don't need to live in a particular state β Rent-to-Own delivery is free to any address in the continental U.S., so the car comes to you rather than you traveling to a lot. Month-to-month rentals also deliver anywhere in the continental U.S., but delivery on those is quoted per address rather than included.
If you have questions about your specific license situation, call or text (818) 458-8729 and ask before you put any money down.
2. Insurance you can actually get
This is the requirement that trips people up more often than credit ever would. The renter carries their own full-coverage policy, and EK Rentals, Inc. must be listed as interested party / additional insured. Liability-only coverage isn't enough.
A few practical notes:
- Teslas are usually quoted higher than an average sedan, so get a quote on the exact model you want before you commit. The available Teslas page shows what's in the fleet now.
- If you can't add the car to your own policy, we help with coverage options.
- Any additional driver must be on the policy and approved in writing. A spouse, a family member or a second rideshare driver can be added, but each one has to be listed on the policy and approved by us in writing before they drive.
3. The first payment
Instead of a security deposit, Rent-to-Own uses a first payment, and then biweekly payments for 48 months. After the 48-month term is complete and the final payment clears, the title transfers into your name within 14 business days.
The first payment doesn't have to arrive in one piece. A small refundable reservation deposit gets you started, and the rest can be paid in portions, whenever you can, before the car ships. The car ships and the agreement is signed once the first payment is complete. Your biweekly payment amount is identical either way β paying in portions just changes when the car arrives.
First payments and biweekly amounts change with the live fleet, so check the Rent-to-Own calculator for current numbers on each model.
4. A mileage plan
Every agreement includes a mileage plan. Plans start at 1,000 miles a month and go up in 1,000-mile steps to 6,000 a month. Mileage is never unlimited, so pick based on honest math: commute, errands, and rideshare hours if you drive for Uber or Lyft. Rideshare drivers almost always need a higher plan than they first guess.
What is not required?
- A credit score. No credit check is run at any point. If you're rebuilding credit, new to the U.S., or have a thin file, none of that is part of the decision. More detail on the no credit check Tesla page.
- Proof of income. No pay stubs, no bank statements, no employment letter, no debt-to-income ratio.
- A cosigner. There's nothing to co-sign.
- A large lump sum on day one. The first payment can be built up in portions before the car ships.
- A dealership visit. The car is delivered; you don't sit in a finance office.
- A long-term commitment you can't exit. You can return the car at any time with no termination fees.
How do you get started, step by step?
- Pick a model. Model 3, Model Y, Model S or Model X.
- Pick a mileage plan. Start at 1,000 miles a month and step up to match how you actually drive.
- Get an insurance quote on that model, with EK Rentals, Inc. as interested party / additional insured.
- Place the refundable reservation deposit to start. It's credited toward your first payment.
- Complete the first payment β all at once, or in portions whenever you can. Note that no specific car is held while you're paying in portions; you're matched with an available car of your chosen model when the first payment is complete.
- Sign and take delivery. Free delivery to any address in the continental U.S. on Rent-to-Own.
- Pay biweekly for 48 months. The title transfers within 14 business days after the term is complete and the final payment clears.
What happens after you qualify?
Qualifying is the easy part. What matters over four years is what's included and what isn't:
- Maintenance, brakes and tires are included, and a backup car is provided while yours is being serviced.
- If the car isn't in working order, it's repaired or replaced within two business days and you aren't charged for the downtime.
- Supercharging, tolls and tickets are yours. A card on file is charged automatically for Supercharging.
- Missed payments have a 5-day grace period. Continued non-payment means the car is returned and the agreement ends.
- Canceling is always available: return the car, no termination fees. Payments already made don't carry over to anything else.
How do these requirements compare to a lease or a loan?
A lease or an auto loan screens you first: credit pull, income documents, sometimes a cosigner, and an approval tier that decides your rate. Rent-to-Own skips that screening entirely β the requirements are a license, insurance and the first payment.
That's a difference in structure, not a pricing claim. What Rent-to-Own gives you is access without a credit decision, maintenance, brakes and tires included, the title in your name at the end of 48 months, and the freedom to hand the car back with no termination fee if your situation changes. The Rent-to-Own vs lease comparison lays the structures side by side.
If you'd rather not commit to 48 months at all, the month-to-month rental has the same license and insurance requirements, takes the first month's payment plus a refundable security deposit that's returned after the return inspection, and ends whenever you return the car.
