Monthly Car Rental for Travel Nurses: How a Tesla Works on a 13-Week Assignment
On a 13-week assignment and need a car? A month-to-month Tesla rental gives you one flat rate, maintenance included, and delivery to your assignment city.

The simplest monthly car rental for travel nurses is a month-to-month Tesla rental: one flat monthly rate, no ownership commitment, maintenance, brakes and tires included, and the car delivered to your address in the continental U.S. (delivery quoted per address). If you're starting a 13-week assignment in a new city and you don't want to drive your own car across the country, that's the cleanest fit β you end it when the contract ends, or keep it rolling if you extend.
If you take contracts back to back and expect to be doing this for years, the other option is Rent-to-Own: a first payment upfront, biweekly payments for 48 months, and the title in your name at the end, with no credit check anywhere in the process.
What are a travel nurse's actual car options?
| Option | Term | Credit check | Maintenance | Ends up yours |
| Drive your own car | However long you keep it | β | On you | Already yours |
| Lease | 24β36 months | Yes | Partial | No |
| Auto loan | 48β84 months | Yes | On you | Yes, after the loan |
| Month-to-month Tesla rental | Open-ended | None | Included | No |
| Tesla Rent-to-Own | 48 months of biweekly payments | None | Included | Yes, title after the term |
A lease or a loan solves the car problem for years, but both run your credit, and both are awkward if your address and your state change every three months.
A long-term Tesla rental sits in the middle: one monthly rate, no credit check, no multi-year commitment, and you hand the car back when you're done.
Why a month-to-month rental fits a 13-week contract
The term matches the job. Contracts get extended, cut short, or swapped. A month-to-month rental doesn't punish that β you return the car when your plans change, with no termination fee.
Nothing to sell at the end. Buying a cheap car for an assignment means finding a buyer in a city you're about to leave, usually in a hurry and usually at a loss.
Maintenance isn't your problem. Service, brakes and tires are included, and you get a backup car while yours is being serviced. If the car isn't in working order, it's repaired or replaced within two business days and you aren't charged for the downtime. That matters more when you don't know a single mechanic in town and you're due on a night shift.
It arrives where you are. Month-to-month delivery goes to any address in the continental U.S. and is quoted per address, so you can fly in and have the car waiting instead of coordinating an airport counter after a travel day. On Rent-to-Own, delivery is free anywhere in the continental U.S.
Do travel nurses qualify? What about credit and out-of-state licenses?
Any licensed driver in the U.S. who can insure a Tesla qualifies. There's no credit check, no income verification, and no application scoring, so a thin credit file, student loans, or a recent move doesn't come into it. Payments aren't reported to the credit bureaus as debt β which also means they won't build your credit.
A license from a different state than your assignment is normal for this job and isn't a problem, as long as it's a valid U.S. driver's license.
What you do need is insurance. You carry your own full-coverage policy with EK Rentals, Inc. listed as interested party / additional insured. If you can't add the car to an existing policy β common if you sold your car before going on the road β we'll help you look at coverage options. Any additional driver has to be on your policy and approved by us in writing before they drive.
How many miles do I get?
Every rental comes on a mileage plan. Plans start at 1,000 miles a month and go up in 1,000-mile steps to 6,000 a month; each step up adds to the payment. Mileage is never unlimited on the standard plans.
Do the math on your actual assignment before you pick:
- A 10-mile commute, three or four shifts a week, plus groceries and errands: roughly 500β800 miles a month. The base plan is plenty.
- A 25-mile commute across a metro, four shifts a week: closer to 1,000β1,200 miles, before you've driven anywhere fun.
- Add a weekend trip or two a month β the whole point of taking a contract somewhere new β and you're into the 2,000β3,000 range.
If you're not sure which step you need, call or text (818) 458-8729 and walk through a typical week before you book.
Where do I charge if I'm in temporary housing?
Most corporate and temporary housing doesn't have a charger, and you probably can't install one for 13 weeks. In practice, travel assignments run on three things:
- Superchargers. Fastest option, available in most metros and along interstates, and billed automatically to the card on file. Plan one stop a week rather than topping up daily.
- Hospital and workplace charging. A surprising number of medical campuses have Level 2 chargers in staff or visitor lots. A 12-hour shift is more than enough to fill a battery on a Level 2 plug.
- Public Level 2 around town. Grocery stores, gyms, parking structures. Slow, but it's free time while you're doing something else anyway.
Charging is the renter's cost on both programs, the same as gas would be in any other car.
What if I extend my contract, or take a new one in another city?
A month-to-month rental is open-ended, so extending simply means the monthly rate continues.
Moving the car to a new assignment city is a logistics question with a real answer, but it depends on the distance and the addresses involved. Call or text (818) 458-8729 before you accept the next contract and we'll tell you what's possible rather than you guessing.
When does Rent-to-Own make more sense than renting monthly?
If travel nursing is a season for you β a year, maybe two, then back to a permanent position β the monthly rental is the right shape. You're paying for flexibility and you get it.
If you've been on the road for years and plan to stay there, a monthly rental that never ends is money that never becomes a car. Rent-to-Own takes a first payment upfront, then biweekly payments for 48 months, and the title transfers to you within 14 business days after the final payment clears. You can still return the car at any point with no termination fee if the plan changes β payments already made don't carry over, so it's a decision to make with your eyes open.
To be straight about it: Rent-to-Own will cost more over 48 months than financing the same car with a good credit score would. What it gives you instead is no credit check, no lender, maintenance, brakes and tires covered the whole way, free delivery anywhere in the continental U.S., and a title at the end. Run both your models in the Rent-to-Own calculator before you decide.
Which Tesla should a travel nurse pick?
If you're choosing between models, the Model 3 and the Model Y are the usual starting points. The Model 3 is the lower payment and the easier car to park in a hospital garage. The Model Y has the hatchback and the cargo space, which matters a lot if you're hauling your own stuff between housing situations twice a year. Model S and Model X are in the fleet too, at higher payments. Current stock is on the available Teslas page.
How do I set it up before my start date?
- Pick your model and mileage plan. Base it on commute distance plus whatever exploring you intend to do.
- Place a small refundable deposit to start the reservation. It's credited toward your first payment.
- Pay the first month plus the refundable security deposit to hold the car for your start date. That payment stays fully refundable until 10 days before your pickup or delivery date β useful when a contract hasn't been finalized yet.
- Get a delivery quote for your address. Month-to-month delivery reaches any address in the continental U.S. and is priced per address.
- Add the car to your insurance with EK Rentals, Inc. as interested party / additional insured before delivery.
The security deposit comes back after the return inspection when you hand the car in. Tickets, tolls and charging are yours throughout, and missed payments carry a five-day grace period.
